My Sugar Addiction

I have a love/hate relationship with sugar. The love usually wins. :-)
The worst part? I've been kind of convicted about it recently.

The degree I was working on when Steven and I decided to get married was Nutrition. I loved it! I'd like to think I know a little about healthful living, but the more I read, the more I realize I don't. Isn't that the best part about getting older?

Then...I stumble upon this article from Gwyneth Paltrow's amazing blog
and I realize anew how much I don't know...

...And the conviction was almost too much to bear.

I have to admit my feathers get a little ruffled when people start trying to push their eating lifestyle on others. I think the good Lord is big enough to take care of leading each family by Himself. So, that's not what I'm doing here and it's not what I gathered from this article that Gwyneth Paltrow puts on her blog. I found it just so helpful, informative, very clearly written, great reminders, and new {for me} information about the power of sugar, that I just really wanted to share it with you!

I highly encourage you sit down for a second and read it.

I'm kinda sad I did, but wow...you really should!
He takes an awesome approach and shows how sugar has the same kind of effects on the body as drugs such as cocaine without going into a bunch of boring chemical details. You will find it so interesting if you're the main chef around your house like I am. ;-)

So, the long and short of it is: I'm going on a semi-sugar sabbatical for a while.
Not cold turkey. But a slow weaning process.
I've come to grips with the fact I'm addicted to sugar and sugar substitutes so I'm definitely beginning some diet-analysis around here and that includes a cessation with the baking until I can find a better balance. With the Lord's help, we're going to get a little more organized about what we put in our mouths around here so we can weed as much of it out as possible. {And, Shiloh, let's cut to the chase. Toothbrushes dipped in dirty bleach water for mopping don't cut it.} In the meantime, I'm drinking chocolate milk to help with the sugar cravings. Is that any better?

This is one of the reasons I am starting to freeze ahead some healthy meals. {If you have any favorites, please, please email me! Found under the "About Me" tab up top.} I have been wanting to meal plan for a while now and I've finally buckled down and decided to just do it {with some flexibility}. I also found this post from Keep Home Simple to be helpful and very up my alley of planning.

I'll do my best to post some of the recipes I try {that are successful} since some of you have already inquired. I do not - by any means - consider myself a good cook. But I do so love it and am trying to learn as best as I can.

I discovered Gywneth Paltrow's blog a while ago and can I say how much I love her style!
{Needless to say, her cookbook is going on my wish list with some of the YMCA money.}
................................

Life is a balancing act...I hope we find ours with sugar ASAP!!!

Hope you enjoy cooking for your family as much as I do ladies!

I think I'm seriously addicted to sugar! =P I've decided this is the year to lose the 60+ baby weight pounds, and I've got to cut out the sugar. And if you hadn't mentioned Gwyneth I would have told you about her...I LOVE the emails from her! Her cookbook has been on my wishlist for a few weeks now...if you get it you have to tell us how you like it!

One thing I've been eating instead of lots of sugar is greek yogurt with oats and fresh fruit or berries. It is seriously good! I buy the plain yogurt because I like the tangy taste but if you need to wean yourself off sweetened yogurt, get the plain and then add a spoonful of honey. Then decrease the honey amount over two weeks down to nothing and you won't even notice =)

And since you've managed to kick the baby weight you should write about how you did it...because I need all the help I can get!

You can do it, Jordan! I still have about 11 pounds to lose. Breastfeeding really helps me and simply eating in moderation. I would like to say I exercise faithfully, but it's more like sporadically. :-( We also got a scale for the first time in my married life and it has really helped me to just check every other day or so. If you're a goal-oriented person {like me} you could set goals for yourself of how much you would like to lose per month. Sign up for a race and you can train for it. 5k's are not too hard! You can do it! This is your year! :-) I'll try to post more about how my weight loss goes too and hopefully it will be motivating for you!
